Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made sensational allegations against President William Ruto, claiming the Head of State offered him a KSh2 billion deal to step down from office quietly.
In a candid interview aired by Royal Media Services’ vernacular radio stations — Mulembe FM, Vuuka FM, and Sulwe FM — Gachagua alleged that the President approached him with the offer, which included financial compensation, continued security, and political rehabilitation promises.
“The President asked me to step down, promising KSh2 billion to retire comfortably, with proper security and remuneration,” said Gachagua. “He suggested that I could consider running for political office in the future.”
The former Deputy President further claimed that Members of Parliament and Senators were also offered financial incentives to support his impeachment. According to Gachagua, MPs were offered KSh500,000 each while Senators were offered up to KSh10 million to vote in favor of removing him from office.
The allegations come amid growing tensions between President Ruto and his former deputy. Gachagua cited key policy disagreements as the root of their fallout, specifically opposing the government’s Affordable Housing project and criticizing what he termed as punitive taxation measures burdening ordinary Kenyans.
“I opposed the heavy taxation imposed on our people. I could not support policies that hurt the common mwananchi,” Gachagua stated.
In response, President Ruto has dismissed the claims, accusing Gachagua of engaging in divisive politics. Speaking during an official event at Mandera Teachers Training College, Ruto called for unity and downplayed the controversy.
“Division will not get you anywhere. And the people of Kenya are resolved to unite so that together we can transform our nation,” the President said.
The claims have sent shockwaves across the political landscape, with observers calling for investigations into the serious allegations. It remains unclear whether Gachagua will provide evidence of the alleged conversations, including any possible recordings.
As the story develops, Kenyans and political stakeholders alike will be watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
