A Ugandan maid caught on CCTV stealing from her employer in Eastleigh is arrested by a DCI.

• Ugandan nanny, Nabalayo Everline Loice, was arrested while boarding a bus bound for Uganda in the Kariokor area.

• Nabalayo was working as a maid at the Ushirika Tower apartment building when she allegedly plotted a robbery with her suspected accomplice, a Ugandan citizen.

• They are said to have made off with property including gold jewellery worth KSh 210,000, a Lenovo XY laptop worth KSh 110,000, and an Infinix phone worth KSh 15,000. 

A Ugandan nanny accused of carrying out a daring robbery in the Eastleigh area has been arrested after being on the run for several weeks.

Everline Loice Nabalayo, 23, was arrested by detectives from DCI Starehe in Kariokor while she was trying to board a bus bound for Uganda. He is now in police custody and facing charges over the incident, which occurred on November 1, 2024.

“After a manhunt that lasted several days, detectives have finally arrested Nabalayo in Kariokor as he attempted to escape on a bus bound for Uganda. He is in police custody being processed, awaiting arraignment,” the DCI said in a statement.

What happened during the Eastleigh robbery incident?

According to police reports filed at Pangani Police Station, Nabalayo was working as a maid at the Ushirika Tower apartment building.

On the day of the robbery, he allegedly conspired with a colleague, and opened the door to allow an armed assailant to enter the home at around 4:40 p.m. According to CCTV footage, the attacker, armed with a hammer, reportedly attacked a 20-year-old domestic worker, Hakimo Muhidin, with the help of Nabalayo.

The robbers escaped with valuables, including gold jewellery worth KSh 210,000, a Lenovo XY laptop worth KSh 110,000, an Infinix phone worth KSh 15,000, four additional laptops and an undisclosed amount of cash. Muhidin suffered serious injuries, including a broken tooth, wounds to his head, arms and legs, and whip marks on his back. He was treated and discharged and is now recovering at a relative’s home in Tassia Estate.

The tenant, a Somali man, was out with his children, while his wife was in India receiving medical treatment at the time of the incident.

How long was Nabalao employed at Eastleigh?

Nabalayo, who had only been employed by the family for three weeks, fled the area with his assistant immediately after the robbery. The search for his accomplice, also believed to be from Uganda, is still ongoing. Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident to uncover more details and recover the stolen items. Nabalayo is expected to be arraigned in court soon to answer charges related to the robbery and assault.
