A family in Nyabondo village, Gem Wagai, Siaya County, is mourning the tragic loss of their 12-year-old daughter, Catherine Akinyi, whose body was discovered in a thicket two weeks after she was reported missing.
Akinyi, a Grade 4 pupil, went missing on February 9, 2025, after attending a football match at Nyabondo Primary School. Her family reported her disappearance when she failed to return home, leading to a desperate search that ended in heartbreak.
Her father, Jerry Oduor, recounted the harrowing moment when they found Akinyi’s scattered clothes in different locations, suggesting she had suffered a violent attack before her death. Her remains were discovered mutilated, with some body parts missing, believed to have been eaten by stray dogs.
The grieving family has expressed frustration over how the authorities handled the case. They were forced to transport Akinyi’s remains in a cheap plastic bag due to the lack of proper transport facilities. Additionally, the family struggled with the high costs of an autopsy and DNA tests, which the hospital demanded, making it difficult for them to proceed with the investigation.
The brutal murder has sparked outrage among residents, who are now demanding swift action from law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice. Many are questioning the security measures in place to protect children and prevent such horrific incidents from happening.
As the family mourns their beloved daughter, the community is calling for justice and urging authorities to intensify investigations into the case.
Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
