Sean “Diddy” Combs’ legal troubles have taken a dramatic turn after his high-profile attorney, Anthony Ricco, suddenly withdrew from his federal sex-trafficking case. The unexpected move, just months before Diddy’s May 2025 trial, has thrown his defense into turmoil and raised questions about the case’s future.
On February 21, 2025, Ricco filed a motion in a New York City court, stating cryptically, “Under no circumstances can I continue to effectively serve as counsel for Sean Combs.” He did not elaborate on the reasons behind his decision, citing attorney-client privilege. His departure comes at a critical moment, as jury selection is set to begin soon.
Ricco, a veteran defense attorney known for representing controversial figures such as Osama bin Laden associates, had joined Diddy’s legal team in September 2024. His abrupt exit raises concerns about internal struggles within the defense team and what it could mean for the high-stakes trial ahead.
Diddy, 55, has been incarcerated at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center since his arrest in September 2024. He faces multiple federal charges, including racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted, he could face a life sentence. The hip-hop mogul has pleaded not guilty to all charges, maintaining his innocence.
The allegations stem from a wave of accusations that began in November 2023, when singer Cassie Ventura filed a lawsuit against him for rape and abuse. Although the lawsuit was settled quickly, it sparked further investigations and led to multiple accusers coming forward with similar claims. In early 2024, federal agents raided Diddy’s properties, seizing electronic devices and other evidence as part of their case against him.
Despite Ricco’s departure, Diddy still has five other attorneys on his defense team, including lead counsel Marc Agnifilo. Legal analysts speculate that his team may try to delay the trial to adjust their strategy. However, Ricco has assured that his withdrawal will not impact the trial schedule.
Public reaction has been mixed. Some believe Diddy’s situation is growing more precarious, while others see the legal shakeup as an attempt to restructure his defense. Social media has been buzzing with speculation, with fans and critics debating the implications of Ricco’s exit.
With the trial set to proceed in May, all eyes will be on the courtroom as one of hip-hop’s biggest figures faces the battle of his life.
