In a pulsating FA Cup third-round encounter at the Emirates Stadium on January 12, 2025, Manchester United edged past Arsenal 5-3 in a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time

The match began with both teams displaying cautious play, resulting in a goalless first half. The game sprang to life in the second half when United’s Bruno Fernandes capitalized on a counter-attack, firing a shot into the top corner in the 52nd minute

The dynamics shifted dramatically when United’s Diogo Dalot received a second yellow card for a reckless challenge on Mikel Merino, reducing his team to ten men. Arsenal quickly took advantage, equalizing in the 62nd minute through Gabriel Magalhães, who scored with an acrobatic finish following a deflection.

Arsenal had a golden opportunity to take the lead when they were awarded a penalty after Kai Havertz was fouled by Harry Maguire. However, Martin Ødegaard’s spot-kick was brilliantly saved by United’s goalkeeper, Altay Bayindir, who guessed correctly and parried the shot away.

Despite their numerical advantage, Arsenal couldn’t break the deadlock, with Havertz missing a close-range chance and Bayindir making crucial saves to deny Declan Rice. The match proceeded to extra time, but neither side managed to find the winner, leading to a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Bayindir emerged as the hero for United, saving Havertz’s penalty. Joshua Zirkzee then sealed the victory by converting the decisive spot-kick, sending Manchester United into the fourth round, where they are set to face Leicester City.

This victory marks a significant turnaround for United under manager Ruben Amorim, especially after their recent league defeat to Arsenal. For Arsenal, the loss adds pressure on manager Mikel Arteta, whose side has now been eliminated from both domestic cup competitions in quick succession.
