On an evening filled with terrible goalkeeping errors and defensive blunders, Tottenham defeated Manchester United 4-3 to advance to the Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool.
These two teams’ seasons have been incredibly uneven, and their backlines showed why with clumsy performances in north London that left both sets of fans cheering and hoping for the best during an intense match.
Tottenham will play Liverpool in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, with the first leg at Spurs set to be played in the week of January 6 and second leg at Anfield in the week of February 3.
Arsenal host Newcastle in the first leg of the other semi-final.
Ruben Amorim’s team overcame a 3-0 deficit to win 3-2 when Fraser Forster twice fumbled with the ball at his feet for United goals. However, Altay Bayindir let a Heung-Min Son corner sail in over his head as Tottenham’s stress increased and the visitors piled forward, threatening an equalizer.
It is difficult to determine which substitute goalie performed worse, but they weren’t alone. Add that to his bad parry out for Dominic Solanke to open the scoring that evening.
Lisandro Martinez’s “wimpish” flick to Dejan Kulusevski for Spurs’ second goal, which came just 46 seconds into the second half, drew criticism from Sky Sports’ Gary Neville. Soon after, the home team ripped through United’s defense once more, with Solanke apparently putting Spurs in cruise control by slipping inside Martinez and then blasting through Jonny Evans’ legs.
Spurs rarely have it that easy, though, as Bruno Fernandes pounced on Forster’s mishandled pass in his own box, allowing Joshua Zirkzee to tap in before Amad Diallo ran down the ‘keeper for the second. Evans nodded in to make the last seconds as hectic as the previous ones, but Spurs managed to surrender from a set-piece even deep into stoppage time.
When the final whistle blew, the home crowd sent out a loud cheer. Their chances of winning a trophy have increased, but it is hard to predict if they will make it to Wembley if their final-four matches against Liverpool, whom they were drawn against after the game, are as crazy as this.
