According to court records, Kenya’s high court temporarily halted an agreement that would have allowed India’s Adani Group to lease the nation’s principal airport. The plan prompted protests in Kenya and caused India’s reputation to be questioned.

The primary bar association in the nation, the Law Society of Kenya (LSK), and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) said in their appeal that the Adani plan is “unaffordable,” “irrational,” and would result in job losses.

The nation could independently raise the $1.85 billion needed to rebuild the airport, the joint application told the court, but “the risk of illegality and wastage of public funds looms large” under the Adani proposal.

As the court case draws to a close, the court imposed an interim suspension on Monday that forbids anyone from working on or implementing the Adani proposal, LSK President Faith Odhiambo wrote on X on Monday evening. On October 8, the matter will be discussed in order to set a date for judgment.
